The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation in Princeton N.J., is the country's largest philanthropy dedicated exclusively to health and heath care.

In recent years, its grant-making activities and its staff have grown considerably, so it reached out to Princeton's own The Hillier Group to design an expansion of its headquarters building, which is located on 70 acres of woodland.

Sordoni Sanska Construction Co. of Milford, Conn., was put in charge of the renovation/rebuild.

The result, which was completed last year, consists of a new 110,000-sq.-ft. building that is connected to the foundation's original facility by a 2-story, 10,000-sq.-ft. atrium. The work involved the demolition of the shell and complete renovation of the original 72,000-sq.-ft. building, which was first put up in 1975.

The Hillier Group designed the building to take full advantage of the idyllic surroundings - with plenty of windows.

In order to facilitate the maximum in cooperation during the design and construction process, Sordoni Skanska established what it called "constructability and value workshops." These meetings brought together the architect, the engineer and construction leaders with representatives of the foundation at key points in the design and construction process.
