Gustavo Lima has been named principal at Cannon Design, a Grand Island, N.Y.-based architectural, engineering and planning firm.

HONORS AND APPOINTMENTS

Laura Hlavenka has been elected vice president of the New York chapter of the Society for Marketing Professional Services.

Michael Alderstein was recently appointed by United Nations Secretary Ban Ki-moon to the position of executive director of the UN’s Capital Master Plan. Alderstein was previously the vice president and architect of the New York Botanical Garden, as well as project director for the restoration of Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty.

Swanke Hayden Connel Architects of New York City was recently honored with two awards as part of the Society of American Registered Architects’ 2007 Professional Design Awards program. The firm was recognized with the Design Award of Exellence, Rehabilitation for its redesign of the New York City Office of Emergency Management, as well as an Award of Merit for its design of the Astana Towers in Astana, Kazakhstan.

Construction equipment rental firm United Rentals recently announced it had been acquired by affiliates of Cerberus Capital Management, L.P. for $4 billion.

Gran Kriegal Associates, a New York City-based architectural firm was recently presented with a Citation for Urband Design/Iconic Contribution to Streetscape by the Boston Society of Architects, in conjunction with the New York Chapter of the American Society of Architects for its design of the Bronx Lighthouse Charter School.
