50th Anniversary
Whiners or Winners?

The future? The design and building industry doesn't have one. Not if it remains leadership-averse.

If Anderson can be in Court, Stern ushered off Disney's Board, and BBB excoriated by the media, all the professions are in trouble. It's one brush and bucket of tar.

A lack of leadership is seeping down from the highest level. We need to buck the trend. Leadership is a tough job for people who defiantly start firms because they "can't work for anyone else." But even rabid individualists still must learn to communicate well to inspire client trust, encourage people to work hard for them, deflect criticism, and, yes, safeguard the profession.
