Museum Eyes Norten in New York

(09/01/2005)

The Museum of the City of New York is highlighting eight current designs in Manhattan and Brooklyn by Mexican-born architect Enrique Norten. Some are still in concept but others are nearing completion. Norten, founder of TEN Arquitectos, has a New York office that has outgrown its Mexican headquarters in staff size and number of projects.

The exhibit, running through October, includes Majic Development Group's $236 million Harlem Park, a Marriott Courtyard hotel combined with residences, offices, and retail above a bright-colored base. The 34-story structure on 125th Street in Manhattan, co-designed by Designgroup International, broke ground in February and will open next year.

Also on display is the Edge, a three-block project by New York-based Douglaston Development in the newly-rezoned Williamsburg area of Brooklyn. Douglaston affiliate Levine Builders is slated to manage construction on the site's two residential and retail towers.

Another project in the exhibit is Norten's design for One York Street, a Tribeca condominium developed by Jani Real Estate in which a six-story glass tower will sit atop an existing brick loft building. Other notable designs are the $75 million Brooklyn Public Library for the Visual and Performing Arts, which is slated to break ground next year, and two conceptual plans by Norten to relocate the New York City Opera.
