Javits Design Team Selection Close

(09/01/2005)

A four-year-long, $1.4 billion expansion of the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in Manhattan is set to enter the design phase this fall after the expected selection of an architectural team this month. The project would expand the facility's convention space and add a new 1,500-room hotel.

The Empire State Development Corp. and the New York Convention Center Development Corp. recently named Tishman Construction as owner's representative to oversee the expansion, which will take place in two phases and receive funding from the city, state, and bond sales. Tishman's team includes the Velez Organization and di Domenico + Partners, both based in New York.

The development corporations issued a request for qualifications in June and a request for proposals in July for a design team that will plan an expansion from the existing 760,000 sq. ft. of exhibit space to more than 1.1 million sq. ft. in the first phase and eventually to 1.3 million sq. ft. The design would include an 86,000-sq.-ft. ballroom capable of holding 6,000 people.

The design phase, scheduled to start in October, incorporates architectural and engineering plans for the renovation and expansion, a structural and HVAC system analysis, and studies of site security and sustainable design features.

The first phase would expand the center past its southern terminus at 34th Street to 33rd Street, while expanding on the north side to 40th Street. The hotel project would require $200 million in private financing, according to the development corporations.
